Login and Registration Issues

» Why can’t I login?
There are several reasons why this could occur. First, ensure your loginname and password are correct. If you still can't login, request a new password. If this doesn't work, you can contact the forum staff for further assistance.

Top

» Do I need to register at all?
You don't need to register to explore the world and information from Ruinz Online- we want you to know what this is all about! You will, however, have to register if you want to participate in roleplays, events, blogs, and the gallery. Many sections are only visible to registered users, and still more are only available to users who are approved. This way, the community holds up a standard of roleplaying ability and stops most spammers and spambots.

Top

» Why do I get logged off automatically?
If you do not check the Log me in forever! box when you login, the board will only keep you logged in for a preset time. This prevents misuse of your account by anyone else. To stay logged in, check the box during login. This is not recommended if you access the board from a shared computer, e.g. library, internet cafe, university computer lab, etc. Also, even though it says 'forever', this option only keeps you logged in until you delete your browser cookies or the site goes into maintenance.

Top

» How do I prevent my username appearing in the online user listings?
Within your X-Cell Control Panel, under “Board preferences”, you will find the option Hide your online status. Enable this option with Yes and you will only appear to the admins, moderators and yourself. You will be counted as a hidden user.

Top

» I’ve lost my password!
Don’t panic! While your password cannot be retrieved, it can easily be reset. Visit the login page and or click here on I’ve forgotten my password. Follow the instructions and you should be able to log in again shortly.

Top

» I registered but cannot login!
First, check your username and password. If they are correct, then you may still need to activate your account through your e-mail address. If you were sent an e-mail, follow the instructions. If you did not receive an e-mail, you may have provided an incorrect e-mail address or the e-mail may have been picked up by a spam filer. If you are sure the e-mail address you provided is correct, try contacting the staff.

Top

» I registered in the past but cannot login any more?!
Attempt to locate the e-mail sent to you when you first registered, check your username and password and try again. Accounts are only deleted after significant warning, including multiple e-mail reminders to all users that the account will be deleted if it isn't posted with during a set timeframe (even so, this rarely happens.) If you need help recovering your account, contact the staff.

Top

» Why do I need to be over 13?
There are laws in the U.S.A and elsewhere which require special paperwork and efforts to protect the information and innocence of children on the internet. In all honesty, we don't want to do that much work. If you register claiming to be over thirteen, it isn't our fault if you get yourself into trouble.

That said, if you're the parent of a child who has lied and registered underage on this website, you can contact us from the same computer used by your child to have the account disabled and removed from public view.

Top

» Why can’t I register?
It is possible the staff have banned your IP address or disallowed the username/loginname you are attempting to register. Registration may also be closed to control the site population- but this should be mentioned on the login page. If you need more help, contact the staff.

Top

» What does the “Delete all board cookies” do?
“Delete all board cookies” deletes the cookies created by the forum which keep you authenticated and logged into the board. It also provides functions such as tracking read topics. If you are having login or logout problems, deleting board cookies may help (just remember, you'll have to login again after you delete your cookies.)

User Preferences and settings

» How do I change my settings?
If you are a registered user, all your settings are stored in the board database. To alter them, visit your X-Cell Control Panel; a link can usually be found at the top of board pages. This system will allow you to change all your settings and preferences.

Top

» The times are not correct!
It is possible the time displayed is from a timezone different from the one you are in. If this is the case, visit your X-Cell Control Panel and change your timezone to match your particular area, e.g. London, Paris, New York, Sydney, etc. Please note that changing the timezone, like most settings, can only be done by registered users. If you are not registered, this is a good time to do so.

Top

» I changed the timezone and the time is still wrong!
If you are sure you have set the timezone correctly and the time is still incorrect, then the time stored on the server clock is incorrect. Please notify the staff to correct the problem.

Top

» My language is not in the list!
Ruinz Online is and English-Language roleplaying forum. Due to the nature of the website, we cannot offer services in other languages and any alternative language packs offered will be for the sake of novelty only. We're sorry for any inconvenience.

Top

» How do I show an image along with my username?
The image shown with your username is known as an avatar and is generally unique or personal to each user. You can select a basic image from the gallery, or upload your own image when editing your profile.

Top

» What is my rank and how do I change it?
There are two types of rank in Ruinz Online. The basic rank, which everyone has, is their level. Your level in Ruinz is based on your activity in the roleplay sections of the forum. You level up as you post more, which allows you to use different items and skills in the game. The other rank is a special title given by the administrators to users who've earned it- either by participating in the board plot or doing something else noteworthy. These are both displayed in the profile and on the topic pages.

Posting Issues

» Why can’t I access a forum?
Some forums may be limited to certain users or groups. To view, read, post or perform another action you may need special permissions. Contact a moderator or board administrator to grant you access.

Top

» Why can’t I add attachments?
Only the forum staff are permitted to attach files to posts. If you want to share a file with your forum friends, please link to it on a seperate filehosting website. Please remember that you will be warned or banned if you link to illegal / pirated files.

Top

» Why did I receive a warning?
You will recieve an onsite text message explaining why you were warned. If you don't understand the message, didn't recieve it, or don't believe it was fair, you can contact the staff for more information. (This contact form posts a message for -all- of the staff to see, not just the one who originally looked over the report).

Top

» How can I report posts to a moderator?
You should see a button for reporting posts to the bottom-right of the post you wish to report. Clicking this will walk you through the steps necessary to report the post. Reports are private, and the person reported will not be told that you reported them without your permission.

Top

» What is the “Save” button for in topic posting?
This allows you to save posts to be completed and submitted at a later date. To reload a saved passage, visit the X-Cell Control Panel.

Top

» How do I bump my topic?
By clicking the “Bump topic” link when you are viewing it, you can “bump” the topic to the top of the forum on the first page. However, if you do not see this, then topic bumping may be disabled or the time allowance between bumps has not yet been reached. It is also possible to bump the topic simply by replying to it. If reply-bumping has been disabled or warned against, you will see a notice pop up.

Top

Formatting and Topic Types

» What is BBCode?
BBCode is a special implementation of HTML, offering great formatting control on particular objects in a post. Because we offer BBCode, you are not permitted to use HTML in the forum. However, BBCode itself is similar in style to HTML, but tags are enclosed in square brackets [ and ] rather than < and >. For more information on BBCode and a list of available codes, see the guide.

Top

» What are announcements?
Announcements often contain important information for the forum you are currently reading and you should read them whenever possible. Announcements appear at the top of every page in the forum to which they are posted. Global Announcements are simply announcements that appear in all forums.

Top

» What are sticky topics?
Sticky topics within the forum appear below announcements and only on the first page. They are often quite important so you should read them whenever possible.

Top

» What are locked topics?
Locked topics are topics which are no longer open for replies or votes, in the case of polls. Topics may be locked for many reasons including violated rules, personal requests, and others. They may be locked by the moderators, admins, or in some cases the topic author.

User Levels and Groups

» What are Admins and Mods?
Admins and mods are official members of the forum staff. The Admins are the founding members of the website with the highest authority, capable of doing almost anything on the website. The mods, or moderators, are volunteers who help enforce the rules set out by the admins with some advanced abilities on the website. At the time of writing, neither of these groups are paid for their contribution to the website- please respect that this entire site is run at the expense of their time and money, for you, for free.

Top

» What are usergroups?
Usergroups are groups with different permissions and displayed colors. They have various purposes, all of which are described on the group pages.

Top

» Why do some usergroups appear in a different colour?
Groups appear in different colors to show everyone which group each user belongs to. The staff are in different colors to make them easier for users to identify when looking for help, and the standard usergroups are in different colors to show different teams, among other things.

Top

» What is a “Default usergroup”?
Your 'default usergroup' is the group whose colors or image are displayed in your profile. A complete list of your groups is still available, regardless of which is the default.

Top

» What is “The team” link?
This page provides you with a list of board staff, including admins and mods.

Top

Text Messaging

» What are Text Messages?
Text Messages on Ruinz Online are private messages exchanged between users. You can't actually send a message to someone's real-world phone using this system.

Top

» I keep getting unwanted text messages!
You can block a user from sending you text messages by using message rules within your X-Cell Control Panel. If you are receiving abusive text messages from a particular user, inform the staff using the contact page.

Top

» I have received a spamming or abusive e-mail from someone on this board!
We are sorry to hear that. The e-mail form feature of this board includes safeguards to try and track users who send such posts, so contact the board administrator with a full copy of the e-mail you received. It is very important that this includes the headers that contain the details of the user that sent the e-mail. The board administrator can then take action.

Top

Friends and Foes

» What are my Friends and Foes lists?
You can use these lists to organise other members of the board. Members added to your friends list will be listed within your X-Cell Control Panel for quick access to see their online status and to send them private messages. Posts from these users may also be highlighted. If you add a user to your foes list, any posts they make will be hidden by default.

Top

» How can I add / remove users to my Friends or Foes list?
You can add users to your list in two ways. Within each user’s profile, there is a link to add them to either your Friend or Foe list. Alternatively, from your X-Cell Control Panel, you can directly add users by entering their member name. You may also remove users from your list using the same page.

Searching the Forums

» Why does my search return no results?
Your search was probably too vague and included many common terms which are not indexed by the forum. Be more specific and use the options available within Advanced search.

Top

» Why does my search return a blank page!?
Your search returned too many results for the webserver to handle. Use “Advanced search” and be more specific in the terms used and forums that are to be searched.

Top

» How do I search for members?
Visit to the “Members” page and click the “Find a member” link.

Top

» How can I find my own posts and topics?
Your own posts can be retrieved either by clicking the “Search user’s posts” within the X-Cell Control Panel or via your own profile page. To search for your topics, use the Advanced search page and fill in the various options appropriately.

Top

Topic Subscriptions and Bookmarks

» What is the difference between bookmarking and subscribing?
Bookmarking is much like bookmarking in your web browser. You aren’t alerted when there’s an update, but you can come back to the topic later. Subscribing, however, will notify you when there is an update to the topic or forum on the board via your preferred method or methods.

Top

» How do I subscribe to specific forums or topics?
To subscribe to a specific forum, click the “Subscribe forum” link upon entering the forum. To subscribe to a topic, reply to the topic with the subscribe checkbox checked or click the “Subscribe topic” link within the topic itself.

Top

» How do I remove my subscriptions?
To remove your subscriptions, go to your X-Cell Control Panel and follow the links to your subscriptions.

» What's RT?
RT is 'Ruinz Time'. Time zones can be complicated, and to make sure everyone is on the same page in understanding due-dates for events and other things, we have the RT clock. If you were wondering, RT is the same as GMT-4 (Eastern Daylight Time).
