Privacy in Ruinz Online

Last revision: July 25, 2011

DragoonLagoon and Ruinz Online respect your privacy. This page is intended to explain what information is collected by the Ruinz Online website, how it is used, and what you can do to keep your personal information private. We will first explain in detail without the legal language, and follow with the phpBB default terms.

Please note that Ruinz Online, as a message board, contains many links to exterior websites. The terms of the privacy policy herein apply only to Ruinz Online. Check any third party site for their privacy policy.

You are also reminded that Ruinz is run as a hobbysite, formally by three people who do not as of date of writing profit from the site, and that our resources are fairly limited. We will do our best to protect your information, but we are not a huge company and there is only so much we can do.

What information is collected?
Ruinz has to gather a fair amount of information to run properly as a website. This information can be seperated into three categories:

Anonymous information is information based on your use of the website. Information like your IP address, web browser and visited pages.

Like most internet sites, we use cookies. These are small files that your web browser stores on your computer to remember settings you have chosen for the website and/or your login information if you so choose.

If you have registered for Ruinz Online, you will have had to give certain information in order to sign up. This includes your loginname, username, password and e-mail address.

Most information added to the forum beyond your account username, loginname, password and e-mail adress is added at your own discretion. Contact information in your profile and any personal information posted on the Ruinz Online forum, chatroom, and other sections of the website falls into this category.

How do you use it?

Anonymous information and cookies are used to provide important functions for the website. Your IP address and cookies allow us to remember you if you had logged in, and assist in preventing abuse of the automatic functions in Ruinz.

Mandatory profile information is used to identify you to the community, contact you (should you choose to allow e-mails from the site) and create your account information.

Optional information is rarely formally used by the forum staff, and is usually provided by you, the user, to allow for third-party contact with other users (like sharing your address on a seperate website).

Any and all information you post on the website may be shared with authorities in the event of legal proceedings.

Who has access to this information?

Your anonymous information and loginname is visible only to the forum staff (Admins and Moderators). Your password is encrypted, and not visible even to the staff.

Your e-mail address may be publically visible or visible only to the forum staff, as per your choice in your control panel.

All other mandatory profile information and optional information is usually publically visible.

What can I do to keep my information private?

The first and best rule to keeping your information private is not to post it on the site! Ruinz has many of the features of a social network, and may be used as such- but when using any website it is important to remember that hackers are sometimes unstoppable. While of course some information is required, and some is harmless to share, please use your discretion before posting personal information anywhere on the internet.

Ruinz also offers multiple privacy options for various aspects of the website. These are all available for registered members through the control panel, and staff are happy to assist if you don't understand these options as they are presented.

Also, while your password is encrypted, it is not recommended to use the same password on multiple websites. A common hacker-tactic is to target a small website with generally weak security, steal account information, and test the same information on more powerfully protected websites like banking sites. Try a password system like for help and more information.
